Who: Dog Rescue Newcastle is a dedicated group of volunteers who have a passion for giving at-risk animals a second chance in life. Its mission is to reduce the number of unwanted companion animals entering the pound system, reduce euthanasia and set up long-term positive preventative measures for the future of companion animals in the Hunter Region and beyond.

Goal: The volunteer team at Dog Rescue Newcastle reached out to me in the hopes of getting a flyer made to promote Dog Rescue Newcastle in the Northshore region. They needed something that would follow their already well established branding whilst being able to include all the information required in a visually pleasing manner.

Planning

After analysing the positive and improvement points of the previous calendar, I was able to establish what I needed to do to improve the overall design. Next, it was a matter of tracking down professional-grade images for an assortment of foster dogs. There were many source platforms for these images, however, in time I succeeded in picking the perfect images for the calendar.

Front Cover

  • Once the images were collected I could start designing the front cover. I went through a process of experimentation with various photos to feature on the front cover, eventually choosing the one of Harlee the dog due to the front-centred lighting and that adorable face! Using a combination of Adobe Programs I re-constructed the original photograph to coincide with Dog Rescue Newcastle’s Branding. I then assembled the elements, making sure to ensure visual elements didn’t compete with one another much like they did in my first attempt.

Design

  • Something the previous calendar struggled with was creating harmony between the dogs' story and the photo. My solution to this was to separate them by utilising sectioned areas dedicated to the body of the text. The position of this body of text was strategically placed depending on the visual weight of the photo, to ensure coherency, consistency and balance in the design. Once the design was complete, quality assurance tests were performed to ensure the output was up to a high standard.

Outcome

The team at Dog Rescue Newcastle was incredibly impressed with the outcome of the design. This project highlighted the organisation’s mission and accentuated their passion for what they do in a personal, contemporary and professionally printed calendar.
